The Roast of Johnny de Mol

For the Comedy Central Roast I was asked to do the overall graphic design, visuals for the leader and the advertising.
We wanted to portray Johnny de Mol as a modern times Jesus Christ. As the prodigal son of media god John de Mol, we set out to ridicule their monopoly in the media world by creating a look and feel for the media god's religion.

On-Air Design

The logo design was influenced by and started from favourite religious (horror) classics, that have movie titles existing of slim and gothic typefaces. The rounded Belwe typeface was an unexpected choice, but when adjusted forms a great structural and goofy/fun element that compliments the logo.

Leader

The opening titles are a hommage to the incredible animation style of Terry Gilliam in Life of Brian (Monty Python). In this style, we cross over several stories of the bible with the life of Johnny de Mol. We also introduce the celebrities that are part of the show, and gave some a biblical reference as well.

Print Design

For Johnny's digital and print advertising, we've designed a stained glass look with the test pattern (het testbeeld) on the back of his head, forming an aureool. It is a wink to the concept of the media gods, and gives us a church setting where Johnny will be crucified/roasted.

Show Graphics

The stained glass look was converted from 2D to 3D so we could also use it for show graphics. We used the LED screens on the stage to create that church settings by making stained glass windows. When it was a celebrity's turn to Roast, they were announced by the transition of a bright (heavenly) light coming out of these windows.
